The Storage Systems Program (SSP) is always looking for good
people. This page describes roughly what we're looking for, and how to
apply to us. If you don't see what you are hoping for - please ask!
What we are looking for
Regular positions:
- researchers (PhD or equivalent required)
- senior researchers (several years experience after a PhD or
equivalent required)
Temporary positions:
- research internships (typically for 3 months; you must be working on
a PhD or a program that directly leads to one). Note:
positions are open December through March each year.
- postdoc positions (typically for 6-12 months).
- visiting scientist program: we have a Visiting Scientist
program in which members of the academic and external research
community spend time working on problems of mutual interest. If
you are interested in considering a position as a Visiting
Scientist, we encourage you to discuss your interest with a
member of our research staff.
If what you are interested in isn't listed here, please contact us!
We place a very high importance on motivation and ability to learn
new things -- which means that you don't have to be working in storage
systems to apply! (In fact, very few of our people have worked in
storage systems before they join us.) Our skill set runs the gamut
from optimization algorithms through storage performance modeling to
distributed OS design. We're always looking to extend it: in fact,
we'd much prefer to hire an interesting, flexible person than somebody
who specializes too narrowly in one topic.
HP is an affirmative action employer. We are particularly
interested in receiving applications from minorities and females:
we're a pretty diverse group already, and would like to extend this
even further.
How to apply to us
Please go to http://www.hpl.hp.com/jobs and
follow the instructions there. Please do not send your
application or resume directly to anybody in the storage team!
If you're not sure whether to apply, please feel free to contact
the group's manager, Alistair Veitch (alistair.veitch at hp.com), to
discuss the decision in confidence. His advice, however, is
predictable: if you don't apply, you won't be considered - what do you
have to lose?!
You may find some notes on life in
industrial research helpful - they were originally written for
about-to-graduate students at CMU, and although they're a bit oldf
now, they may still be of interest.
Additional notes for internal HP applicants
Please contact us directly, but expect us to use the same process
outlined above - that way, we can track your resume with the same
enthusiasm with which we treat people from outside.
