Richard
H. (Dick) Lampman led HP's central research and development
organization, HP Labs, from 1999 until his retirement in 2007.
In this role, he had responsibility for research activities in seven
labs around the world, with the dual objectives
of providing leading-edge technologies to HP's current businesses
and creating new technology-based business opportunities for HP.
Lampman joined HP in 1971 and held a series of positions in HP's measurement and computing businesses before joining HP Labs in 1981. From 1988 to 1992, he was director of the Computer Systems Lab, where he managed the development of PA-Wide Word, the architecture that became the basis for the HP and Intel alliance to build a common 64-bit architecture, which resulted in the Intel Itanium processor.
From 1992 to 1999, Lampman served as director of HP Labs' worldwide Computer Research Center. Under his leadership, several key technologies were developed that launched new businesses for HP, including digital photography. Lampman was named director of HP Labs in 1999.
Lampman holds bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. He has served on numerous research and university advisory boards, and he is a member of the ACM and
IEEE.
