Department Manager, Linux, Systems & Networks Planetary Scale Computing Program
John Sontag manages the Linux, systems and networks research
at HP Labs in Palo Alto, CA. HP Labs has been conducting
research in large-scale, service-centric computing for more
than 15 years. The evolution of open source and commodity-based
systems are a key element in the emergence of utility computing.
Sontag also is the lead manager in the creation of a research
and production data center at HP labs in Palo Alto and Bristol.
In this distributed data center, HP is bringing together the
best of its products and research in a unique infrastructure
for use by the HP Labs team as well as our external partners
around the world.
Sontag has more than 20 years experience at HP in systems
and operating system design and research. He has had a variety
of leadership roles in the development of HP-UX on PA-RISC
and IPF, including 64-bit systems, support for multiple Input/Output
systems, multi-system availability and Symmetric Multi-Processing scaling for OnLine Transaction Processing
and Web servers.
He also led HP's effort to create an
Internet appliance business, filling a gap on the way to utility
computing.
