[Gc] Example segfault with GC 7.1

The attached example segfaults for some reason when using gc_allocator  
with std::string; works fine using traceable_allocator. The example is  
a modification of
  http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Hans_Boehm/gc/gc_alloc_exC.txt

Compiled using
  g++ -lgc gc_alloc_ex.cc -o gc_alloc_ex

g++ --version
powerpc-apple-darwin9-g++-4.0.1 (GCC) 4.0.1
