Scratching my bald spot here...

I tried this.  As a reference I am also issuing ps v [pid] to get memory 
usage.

Start of my test case:

Heap size = 0
PID     TTY      STAT   TIME  MAJFL   TRS   DRS   RSS %MEM COMMAND
24213 pts/3    S+     0:01         17       164      6591  2896  4.7     
./aemnet

After the allocation loop:

Heap size = 442368
PID     TTY      STAT   TIME  MAJFL   TRS   DRS   RSS %MEM COMMAND
24213 pts/3    S+         0:02     17       164      7315  3612  5.9 
.    /aemnet

After Free:
Heap size = 438272
PID     TTY      STAT   TIME  MAJFL   TRS   DRS   RSS %MEM COMMAND
24213 pts/3    S+     0:02         17       164      7315  3612  5.9     
./aemnet
