This has been in there for a while now.  (check out cvs)

AC_CHECK_LIB([event],
        [event_init],
        ,
        [AC_MSG_ERROR([libevent is required to build idleconn])])

Does this not work?

libevent needs a pkgconfig (.pc) file which would make this simpler.
