world's best industrial research lab (wbirl) program

WBIRL was an initiative to make HP Labs the best industrial research lab in and for the world. It was an effort to tap into the collective wisdom of HP Labs to help transform our organization to increase our contributions to HP and HP's contributions to the world.

In 1993, then director of HP Labs, Joel Birnbaum launched the program with a vision inquiry into what it would take to make HP Labs the world's best. He appointed Barbara Waugh to manage the program. The program ended in 1999.

For more of the WBIRL story, please read The Self-Organizing Transformation of Hewlett-Packard Labs.

The purpose of this website is twofold:

  • to share some of our learnings over the past five years of WBIRL and

  • to engage in conversation other people and organizations interested in the change process.

If you would like to discuss any information you find on the site, don't hesitate to contact us.
