HP Labs India is developing new technologies in the areas of handwriting recognition engines, broadcasting and communication services for the global market.

The two-year-old Bangalore-based HP Labs, the research and development (R and D) arm of global IT major Hewlett-Packard, is set to undertake field trials for its script-independent handwriting recognition technology and broadcasting services soon.

"We are at the trial stage of some technologies developed here. It will take some time before we could put these for commercial purposes," HP Labs India (mobility solutions) director Ajay Gupta told reporters here Tuesday.

Before creating new technologies or applications, various factors such as affordability, communication infrastructure and local language needs are taken into account.

"Technologies developed in India are aimed at commercialising them for our global market," Gupta added.

The Indian R and D facility, which is one of seven HP Labs located world over, is also working on projects such as "script mail", a handwritten e-mail device that send mails in one's own language; electronic form filling in local languages and adult literacy testing programmes.

"We spend $4-5 billion on our global R and D activities and five percent of the total fund is invested in HP laboratories worldwide," HP Labs director Richard H Lampman said.

The company plans to ramp up its headcount in HP Labs India as well as at laboratories outside to keep pace with the robust growth in the technology industry.

The officials, however, declined to reveal the hiring projections.
