BANGALORE: From trying to improve language capabilities on
computers and devices to experimenting with niche broadcast
networks to deliver IT services, HP Labs in Bangalore is working
to invent technology that could give a competitive edge to
HP by creating new business opportunities.
Elaborating on the focus of HP Labs, located
across countries like US, UK, Israel and Japan, HP senior
VP and HP Labs director Dick Lampman said, "We work on
areas like disruptive technologies, printing and imaging,
digital entertainment, industrial solutions including mobility
and rich media and technologies for better service delivery."
He illustrated examples such as LEP (liquid
electro photography), digital imaging research and software
solutions, which were developed out of HP Labs that have helped
HP improve its bottomline.
Touching on the technologies that were developed
at the Bangalore center, HP Labs India lab director Ajay Gupta
said, "We have created a breakthrough in language scripts
with a device called Script mail, which is intuitive and easy
to operate and ideal for vernacular communication." He
added that that lab trials had been completed and the device
was ready for field deployments. According to him, another
initiative that is in the trial phase is in the area of broadcasting
in collaboration with niche broadcasters. HP hopes to address
the education and government verticals with these initiatives.
Though Lampman was unwilling to reveal details
of the number of engineers working at the center in Bangalore,
he said that it was a sizeable group and also added that HP
hopes to ramp up the headcount.
