Freepad is a novel handwriting-based
text input method that supports “attention-free”
or “heads-up” interaction with pen and touch
interfaces. It is an Input Method Editor (IME) that allows
the user to overwrite standard characters in an alphabet
one over another and is particularly suitable for small
surfaces. It does not expect that the relative position
between strokes and/or characters be maintained in order
to support attention-free or heads-up text input.
The prototype word recognition system that
currently recognizes lowercase English and Tamil words.
FreePad currently runs on a notebook computer, and captures
overwriting input as a sequence of finger strokes from the
notebook’s touchpad.

Gesture-based Command and Control allows
users to access applications, URLs, system commands and
application demands simply by tracing a gesture with either
a finger or stylus. This gesture can be personal, either
a familiar character or an arbitrary shape. Highly accurate
gesture recognition is achieved over a period of time because
the system learns and refines its recognition with each
use. Gesture-based navigation uses special gestures to more
efficiently navigate files, folders, playlists and bookmarks.
