HP Labs India
Video content on the web is exploding rapidly (users upload more than 48 hours of video every minute on Youtube). This is complemented by increasing broadband penetration and higher data capacities in many countries. However, current user interfaces for online video have some limitations. The interfaces are usually browser based and are modeled after a search metaphor. Users have to constantly interact with the online video website (e.g. Youtube) after each video and decide what the next video they should watch.HP Labs India has created a Microsoft Windows application called “Personalized Video” to make online video consumption easier, personalized and leanback. Using Personalized Video, users can
- Create channels (E.g. Indian Recipes, World cup Cricket) of their video interests
- Rate videos (like or dislike); the system learns user tastes to prioritize future consumption
- Request videos similar to the current video being viewed and web pages related to the current video
- Share videos with Twitter/Facebook friends
- Consume recommended videos (Suggestions)
- Annotate videos
Such interfaces are especially relevant for markets like India that are more likely to consume the video web. Text creation in Indian languages has not taken off due to various issues (e.g. local language keyboards required for content creation). On the other hand, the proliferation of digital cameras and mobile phone cameras has led to creation of lots of video content in Indian languages.
From a content provider perspective, personalized video can lead to improved consumption of content, drive traffic to online websites and enable additional revenue models (paid content, targeted advertisements). The application can also be used in verticals like education and healthcare.
In summary, Personalized Video is a client side video consumption application that provides a novel online video experience. Its differentiating features are usage of the channel metaphor for video consumption, personalization, cross-media recommendation. The goal of this beta launch is to understand user preferences and obtain feedback
