Mr. Sun Mao-Song of Tsinghua University discusses collaboration opportunities with HP Labs' Warren Greving and Yao Xiang-yi

October, 2008 - The 11th China Computer Science Deans Forum was held at Tsinghua University from Oct 25 to 26 2008, with the theme of "Innovative Graduate Development". Mr. Zhao Qin-ping, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Education (MOE), Mr. Pan Yun-he, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and representatives from over 100 Chinese universities participated in the event.

Launched in 1998, the Computer Science Deans Forum is an annual event jointly initiated by seven top universities in China. It aims to improve the quality of teaching and research of Chinese universities and research institutes, and provides an excellent opportunity for the leaders of the computer science disciplines to share ideas about professional developments, scientific infrastructure at universities and recent trends in research and education for the new generation.

During the two-day meeting, 14 deans of computer science departments shared what they have done in their universities to develop innovative student talent, as well as discussed the challenges they are facing.

Warren Greving, Global Research Development Director at HP Labs, gave a keynote speech entitled “Globalized Open Innovation – Local Color”, joining speakers from other sponsor companies such as Intel, Microsoft and Intellectual Ventures Co. He introduced HP Labs’ research areas and open innovation model. He also emphasized that HP will continue to cooperate with universities and other local R&D partners to implement HP’s open innovation strategy in China. Greving’s speech highlighted the value of achieving win-win partnerships through collaborations between HP and universities.

One of the attendees, Mr. Sun Mao-song, the head of Department of Computer Science and Technology of Tsinghua University, expressed great interest in HP’s open innovation model and in exploring new cooperation opportunities with HP. Mr. Yao Xiang-yi, Region Lead for China in HP Labs’ Open Innovation Office (OIO) and Mr. Greving discussed further with Mr. Sun, who suggested developing joint curricula between University and industrial labs such as HP Labs, in order to foster the development of graduates who are innovation-oriented and promote leadership skills.
