Biography

I am currently a senior researcher in the Web Services and Systems Lab, focused on creating services to transform business document applications and processes.

Over many years at HP, my work has spanned distributed systems, office automation, viewers, novel input techniques, ultra-portable computing for the home, device independence, variable data publishing and document representation.

I was chair of the W3C Device Independence Working Group from March 2002 to October 2003.

Before joining HP in 1987, I carried out research in software engineering at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and on formal methods of specifying computing systems in the Programming Research Group at Oxford University. I also lectured in computer science at University College Dublin.

I graduated with a BSc and PhD in computer science at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Research interests

Currently, I am working on novel ways of representing and delivering business document processes and services. This includes research on aspects of distributed systems, composite document representation, adaptable document presentation and business application description.
