Jaap Suermondt

Jaap Suermondt directs the Business Optimization Lab at HP Labs. He holds a B.S. degree in Mathematical and Computational Science from Stanford University, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Medical Information Sciences from Stanford University School of Medicine. His thesis work was in Bayesian networks and probabilistic reasoning. He has been with Hewlett-Packard in various research and management functions since 1992. He has worked on research projects in information management and on various projects targeted towards HP Services. Past research includes work in data mining (particularly text mining, automated categorization and quantification), uncertainty management, decision support systems (e.g. diagnostics for printers), electronic health records and clinical information systems.

    Before coming to HP, he was in the Medical Informatics group at Stanford University, where he got his Ph.D. working with Greg Cooper and Ted Shortliffe.

    Suermondt chairs the Scientific Program Committee of the AMIA 2008 Annual Symposium (Washington DC, November 2008) of the American Medical Informatics Association
