Robert Ulichney received a B.S. in physics and computer science
from the University of Dayton, Ohio and a Ph.D. from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in electrical engineering and
computer science. He was with Digital Equipment Corp. from
1978-1998 where he focused on image and video implementations for
both hard copy and display products. He introduced the widely used
concept of Blue Noise halftoning to the printing industry. From
1998-2002 he was with Compaq Computer Corporation’s Cambridge
Research Lab where he led a number of research efforts in video and
image processing; for Compaq Research he chaired the patent review
committee.
Since joining HP Labs in 2002,
Bob’s research activities include image enhancement, low bit depth
rendering, projector luminance correction, and display performance
quantization. One of the projects he led is a public web service
RedBot.net for automatic correction of photo red-eye. Most recently
he led a cross-lab Program for Image Search & Organization. Bob is
the general chair for hPICS, the HP Imaging and Color Symposium held
on the MIT campus in 2007 and is planned for the UC Berkeley campus
in 2008. He has several issued patents and publications for
contributions in a range of imaging areas, including a book with MIT
Press.
