ange-ftp (efs) for emacs 19 -- when?

I have just started using emacs 19, but I'm probably going to have to
go back to 18, because I can't seem to get rms-ftp to work.

I realize that this is probably not the place to ask any difficult
questions about rms-ftp, but the symptom I encounter is that when I
try to get any file via rms-ftp (/user@machine:), the attempt fails
with the message, "Symbol's function definition is void:
remove-directory".  This is not real intuitively obvious to me.    

I suspect this has to do with my having botched the surgery on my
~/.emacs.  Anyone have any idea what is going on here?  Or maybe how
to fix it?

BETTER YET, is efs going to be available soon?
