The ange-ftp which comes with 19.23-alpha seems on the surface to work, but if
you look carefully at the *ftp ...* buffer, it looks like it is out of sync in
some way. The failure of the pwd command is causing the ftp client and
ange-ftp some grief.
efs 1.7-alpha handles bbn.com OK as far as I can tell. I don't know about efs
1.6-beta.

Some ftp clients, including the one under HP-UX 9.01 automatically recover
from this and issue the quote XPWD command. Their output while they do this
really confuses most, if not all versions of ange-ftp since they first claim
that the command fails, then issue the second command which succeeds.

A quick note about ange-ftp and efs versions while I'm on-line...
The last "official" (i.e. sanctioned by me) release of ange-ftp for FSF 18.XX
was 4.20. No futher releases of ange-ftp for this platform are currently
planned (but see efs, below).
The RMS version of ange-ftp for FSF 19.23 will probably be 1.49. It was
originally based on 4.20, but re-written quite a bit by RMS. I don't know if
he or FSF will do more than simple bug fixes to it. I'm not really doing much
more than tracking FSF changes to it and making sure that efs has covered the
changes.
efs is the original ange-ftp team's replacement for ange-ftp 4.20. It runs
under 18.59, 19.22 and various releases of Lucid Emacs 19. efs is currently
at version 1.6 beta and is being evaluated by a team of 30-40 volunteers. 1.7
alpha has been out a while to a smaller alpha testing team.
