Thanks for all the tips and patches.
I'll go ahead and apply Andy's patch, but I think I solved the mystery
just before I received it.
Andy probably doesn't remember, but he provided me with a patch for
ange-ftp-parse-dired-listing because I have was having trouble listing
directories on our old gateway machine, which was an obscure TI 1505
speaking a weird Sys V dialect. Our new gateway is a Sparc 10. It's
been so long, I had forgotten, though, about that patch, which was
buried in my startups in ange-ftp-process-startup-hook.
When I commented it out, everything seems to be working pretty well.
I've been testing out a few random machines across the net, and there
have been only a couple of crashes. I'll apply Andy's patch and see how
things so.
Thanks again to Andy and Doug for all the help. It's really nice to be
able to net-cruise from emacs again.
