EFS 1.6 bug: dired-do-background-shell-command quotes $-signs?

Dired hackers,

This is apparently a bug in the dired which comes with efs 1.6.  If I type '&'
in a directory [dired-do-background-shell-command], I find that if the command
I enter contains environment variable references with $-signs, the dollar gets
a backslash before it and thus isn't expanded by the shell.
