It looks as though your smart ftp client (iftp) is stripping off an important
part of the banner message output by gatekeeper:
Connected to gatekeeper.dec.com.
220- *** /etc/motd.ftp ***
Very roughly, that 220- line tells ftp clients that some junk is coming and to
ignore it until you see a 220 on its own. Since efs never sees the 220- it is
probably in the wrong state.
Off the top of my head at 1am, I'm not really sure what you can do about it.
If Sandy is still awake, he might know.
Personally, I use a socksified ftp client which doesn't have any of these
quirks.
