I don't like the look of all this escape sequence junk in the buffer before
the 'ftp>' prompt, nor before the 331 message. Is there any wey of forcing
your ftp client not to do that?

That's because all the efs and ange-ftp mailing lists have moved to
cuckoo.hpl.hp.com. Folks on the efs-testers mailing list have been informed
about the changes in advance.
We strongly urge that all people using the beta versions of efs join the
efs-testers mailing list so that we can keep them supported and informed about
changes in both efs and administrivia. I include the standard list info
below.

Try changing this so that your wierd ftp prompt string is recognized.

ange@hplb.hpl.hp.com
There are several mailing lists relevant to efs. If you wish to join
a list, send e-mail to their -request address.
efs-bugs@cuckoo.hpl.hp.com
This is where all bug reports should go. M-x efs-report-bug is the
recommended way of sending bug reports about efs, and this will send by
default to this address.
efs-help@cuckoo.hpl.hp.com
This is where general discussions about efs should go. For beta-testing
discussions, use efs-testers instead.
efs-testers@cuckoo.hpl.hp.com
This is where discussions about beta testing efs should go. Bugs should
however be reported to efs-bugs. Patches for beta test bugs will be
sent to this list.
efs-announce@cuckoo.hpl.hp.com
This is where announcements such as new generally available releases of efs
should go.
Each of the lists have a -request address to join and leave the list.
efs 1.9 (beta) may be found at:
/anonymous@anubis.ethz.ch:/sandy/efs/efs-1.9.tar.gz
and

Note that efs is still beta test code, so please don't redistribute it.
