Can you send a copy of your *ftp ...* buffer when this happens.
Sounds like this is a bug in the FTP server.  The VMS FTP server that
I use (Multinet) does not allow renames of the sort that you are
trying to do.  I don't recall the exact way that it bombs at the
moment.

I'm not sure what a "bad beep" is.  Or more precisely, what's a good
beep? ;-)  From your backtrace, it looks like efs is upset because a
file that the server promised to send was not sent as advertized.
