Adrian sent this to gnu.emacs.bugs. I think that it might also be relevant
here.

Subject: Emacs hangs when menu-bar-lines is 0

In GNU Emacs 19.29.1 (mips-sgi-irix5.3, Motif) of Tue Jun 27 1995 on freeze
configured using --with-gcc=no --prefix=/usr --with-x-toolkit=motif

(Using efs 1.14 instead)

1)	With the following line in .emacs file :

	(setq default-frame-alist '((menu-bar-lines . 1) (background-color . "darkgreen") (foreground-color . "cyan")))

	Run emacs

	\C-x\C-f /user@machine: TAB or ENTER

efs logs in to remote machine (get dired listing with enter)

2) Change the menu-bar-lines to 0 above

	Run emacs again

	\C-x\C-f /user@machine: TAB or ENTER

emacs says "Opening FTP connection to machine", and just sits
there (some minutes at last) - \C-g doesn't help. The only way I
can stop it is killing it.

Thanks,

Adrian
