efs 1.9 and vm 5.70.L (beta)

When I try to retrieve new mail in vm, I get a lisp nesting exceeded
max-lisp-eval-depth error. Looking at a backtrace, I find these two
functions calling each other recursively for a long time. I recently
changed to efs 1.9, and the problem doesn't occur if I don't load efs,
which leads me to believe this is a bug in the new dired.

I'm using emacs 19.25.
