I just tested the combination of dired v7.5 and archie v3.0.1, and initial
results indicate no problems loading or retrieving with efs v1.12/1.43.

BTW, archie v3.0.1 is available at

  ftp://ftp.hmc.edu/pub/emacs/packages/archie/archie.el.gz
