archie.el completely lost in the dust by efs/dired changes

Hello, Archie lovers,

The latest versions of Xemacs and efs have made substantial changes
that require matching changes in archie.el.  I haven't the time to
test this out, let alone fix it at the moment, but I would appreciate
it if any of you who can would spend whatever time you can collecting
up the list of problems.  Any fixes you can provide as well will also
be gratefully received.

Piet van Oostrum has been doing a very thorough job of this, which I
greatly appreciate, but he's found enough stuff that I'd like to see
some other input as well - there's probably even more.

I do not expect to have time for archie.el for several more weeks now,
unfortunately.
