I believe (is this right Jack?), that archie does things
the way that it does with keymaps to try to hack around
an Emacs bug. At some Emacs version this has been fixed
(probably not 19.22), so this problem will go away when
you upgrade Emacs.
That's the way I understand it.
Jack, will the archie.el that you sent to me to put on
the efs sites automatically be OK with a new enough
Emacs, or are changes to the code necessary?
As far as this problem is concerned, it should be fine with
current Emacs - I think 19.27 was the vintage where rms fixed
the copy-keymap problem. Of course, all along I thought
copy-keymap was working as intended, so I never engaged in any
dialog with him, and it might still be that there's a bug if the
keymap gets even deeper - but at least he seems to feel that any
such problem is his, not mine.
However, there's still a problem in that archie.el doesn't do
something or other that the efs-distributed dired wants, and so
archie buffers converted to dired buffers don't work. I'm in
the middle of a fire fight here at work, and will be out of town
Wednesday through Friday, so I can't get to this for a while.
Indeed, of the things already piling up to do when I get back,
this looks less important than some, so I'm tentatively
scheduling it for the Christmas->New Year's break. That OK? Is
anyone egregiously inconvenienced by this???
