Copy-subtree?

One functionality I've found myself wanting a couple times is the ability to
copy items selectively from a remote site while still retaining the
directory structure at the destination. Currently (I think), if I mark a
number of files in a Dired buffer in which I have used 'i' a couple of
times, the process of copying the files flattens the directory heirarchy
since all the files end up in a single directory. Is there currently any
functionality in Dired that would allow me to preserve the original
directory structure, creating subdirectories if it needs to? If not, could
there be?
