Dired 7.9 bug: Boring faces not shown

I don't see the "boring" faces in my buffers -- e.g. `.o' or `.elc'
files.  I am a very new dired user, so I may be missing something
obvious.  However, I seem to remember that "boring" files worked "out
of the box" in XEmacs 20.2.

I don't think I have any special dired settings in my `.emacs'.
