EFS 1.18 bug: Proxy gateway string wrong for our gateway

Fellow efs'ers:

This is a copy of something I posted to comp.emacs.xemacs.  It's
probably more appropriate to send it to you, though, in case you don't 
read that group.  Here it is:

We recently had a firewall put in, so I had to switch to using efs's
proxy gateway.  I ran into a problem with the string that it sends the
proxy, though; it would choke on the "quote USER" portion, thinking it
was the port number.  If I take out the "quote USER" part and just
send anonymous@ftp.site, things work fine.  I even manually edited the
efs.el code to do this.  I guess I'm wondering if that string could be
a variable instead of hard-wired as it is now?  Or is there a better
way to handle this (yes, I'm not an elisp expert!)?  Also, is our
proxy server non-standard?
