Current Innovations: Kampung
Community and social networking has become the byword of the new slew of applications both on and off the internet. The prolific use of Facebook and Twitter has demonstrated the desire for communities of users to communicate, collaborate and interact with each other. Can other types of applications harness this paradigm to advance their own respective social networking purposes?
HP Labs Singapore created Kampung as a community platform that provides a community building function to any systems or even as a complete standalone. While most social networks focus on humans as the only end-users, Kampung provides a uniform interface not only for humans to form part of the social network, but also including devices, sensors, actuators and software systems to form part of the social eco-system.

A specialized version of Kampung for the digital media industry in Singapore is the Media Cloud, a service created by HP Labs Singapore. The Media Cloud utilizes Kampung as the basis of the digital media community it forms. It provides a set of community building features including aspects, posting in streams, profiles, and other social networking functions; a guided template of sequenced flows that lead specific and specialized communities or groups to collaborate and perform certain sets of tasks to achieve a common goal; a set of integration APIs for external services to integrate with Media Cloud, and a services marketplace where services can be introduced and purchased.
