The Future: SimpliCity

More than 50 percent of the human population live in a city today, and more than a million people will join them each week. How can technology have a positive impact on the people living in the city, the public sector governing the city and the private sector supporting the city?

HP Labs has initiated SimpliCity as a study of urbanization and how cloud computing, social media and device mobility can be used to create integrated solutions to help make living in a city a better experience. The project contains five separate but inter-related workstreams that allow a city to be better managed:

  • CityWorks
    • Understanding how a city works to identify the type of data, intelligence and applications needed to manage a city better.

  • CityModel
    • Developing the ultimate information model that describes the nature and state of all classes and objects in a city and the relationships between them.

  • CityData
    • Studying which data – namely fixed sensor, mobile sensor, structured and unstructured data – are necessary to manage a city and how to extract and provide such data to the city model.

  • CityIntel
    • Examining the nature of intelligence – both explicit and implicit intelligence – needed to manage a city and to allow people to make better decisions.

  • CityApps
    • Studying how citizens, public and private sector entities and the environment can be influenced to modify their behaviours through the use of cloud and mobile applications and social media.
