Abstract: Applications of multi-user hypertext require specific support for group tasks and processes. This paper identifies a crucial set of features required by such applications. We show the fundamental implications of these features on the technology of the underlying shared hypertext system. Based on our experiences in building a shared hypertext platform and a test application for computer conferencing, we discuss the effects of the structure of a hypertext web, asynchronous operations, coordination issues, graphical user interfaces and intended application semantics on concurrency control, consistency maintenance, and change notification.
