Abstract: The design and ultimate success of Intelligent Computer Aided Design system requires an understanding of how designers interact with such systems. We have used our studies of current design methods to determine the required functionality of our prototype Intelligent CAD system. This system is currently being tested by Hewlett-Packard designers on current product designs, allowing us to observe system usage. This paper describes the prototype system's functionality and user interaction, the observations made in the course of having designers use and test the system, the key results of those tests, and the implications of these results on future Intelligent CAD system design and research directions.
