Abstract: This editorial for a special issue of the Artificial Intelligence in Medicine journal reviews the state of the art in the design and implementation of intelligent patient monitoring and control systems. It identifies key research challenges that arise from an understanding of genuine clinical need, and emphasizes that the field needs to look beyond diagnostic decision support, to the design of systems which closely match clinical tasks. A failure to properly address decision support for control based tasks is highlighted. Pitfalls in the design of such systems are identified, including problems of cognitive mismatch that arise from poorly designed user interfaces.(to appear in Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, 5, (1993), 1-8)
