Keyword(s):
Abstract: We propose a new MAC layer protocol, called S++, which offers several features that are desirable for Gbit/s Local Area Networks. We explain how the S++ protocol overcomes the limitations of an earlier protocol and yet it remains very simple and thus attractive for the high-speed environment. The performance of the protocol has been investigated by detailed simulations. An analytical model has been used to verify these simulations. We present a number of results which show how S++ offers consistently lower mean delays than the DQDB protocol, when used on a folded bus network. Further results show how virtual priorities can be established without the need for an explicit priority scheme.
