The Design and Implementation of the HANGMAN Gb/s Network

Abstract: The HANGMAN network provides very high-speed transmission of both asynchronous and synchronous data over a local or metropolitan area. A folded bus topology was selected with point-to-point transmission rates in excess of one Gb/s. A novel MAC protocol has been combined with a bandwidth reservation scheme in order to support the multisevice demands of future applications. Each network interface can provide multiple connections to a host, with a maximum aggregate bandwidth of 800Mb/s. A prototype system has been constructed and a high quality videophone application has been used to demonstrate the performance of the system.
