A High-Throughput Network Interface to a RISC Workstation

Abstract: This short paper describes a network interface for HP PA-RISC workstations able to sustain 200 Mbit/s throughput to an application with acceptable CPU overhead. This design will support data transfer bursts of up to 1 Gbit/s, is simple and low cost, needs no outboard protocol processing and can be adapted to a number of networks. A prototype FDDI design has shown link saturation from socket to socket.
