Keyword(s):

Abstract: We are developing an application which has strict performance, reliability and availability requirements. It seems appropriate to use a load balancing algorithm to guarantee the required performance. However it does not seem to be possible to ignore the fault tolerance issues when designing such an algorithm. In this paper we briefly describe the application requirements, we show where load balancing might be useful and we discuss some of the fault tolerance issues. This position paper was accepted for the "Dynamic Object Migration and Load Balancing" workshop at ECOOP'92, held in Utrecht, Netherlands in June 1992.
