Abstract: The vast amount of personal and private information being stored on-line by corporations, governments, and websites detailing individuals' lives, interests, and habits sets the stage for attacks on personal privacy. Given that this is an unavoidable effect of using personalised web services, end users today do not have a way to conveniently and effectively control how their personal information is used. They also do not have assurances that their data will be treated responsibly once released. We present a solution that provides a way for users to set privacy preferences, validate service provider capabilities to honour those preferences, and ultimately make informed decisions based on the assurance information gathered. The novel features of our approach are the provisioning for greater degree of evidence through a framework that captures privacy preferences and system capabilities in a common language, allows protocols for increased interaction between users and services, and that bridges the gap between privacy concerns and technology. We also present an implementation of our proposed system and discuss how it fits into a larger framework for privacy called PRIME. We include a standalone demonstration of the implementation to show how it might fit into current web applications involving release of personal information.
